A chat with Don Griffis about his "Eagle Days"

(Originally produced for the San Angelo Review which merged with The Texana Review in March 2008)

DonGriffis Don Griffis is a lawyer in San Angelo. As a matter of fact, he grew up in San Angelo, went to public schools in the city and married the girl down the street.

He went off to college and learned to be a lawyer – a good one. He’s a partner with the Jackson Walker law firm.

He’s also been active in the San Angelo community, offering his time and effort with organizations ranging from the YMCA to the Boy Scouts.  He contributed his leadership talent on the San Angelo City Council and the Concho Valley Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council.

Mr. Griffis is a Vietnam veteran. He was a Marine who wore two hats – one as a Legal Officer, the other as an Infantry Officer.

While many served in Vietnam, only a few have written about their experiences.  Don Griffis is one of those.

His book is titled “Eagle Days,” and he agreed to talk with me about it and a little about himself.

Range Fire: Near miss in Robert Lee, Texas

(Originally produced for the San Angelo Review which merged with The Texana Review in March 2008)

MarkSides_web On Monday, February 25th, I stepped out of my country studio around 4 o’clock in the afternoon for a break. I immediately smelled smoke and saw clouds of it out to the north near Robert Lee, ten miles away.

I called a friend who lives there.

"Yep, we got a range fire," he said.

The next 72 hours were a challenge for the community of Robert Lee, Texas.

But the citizens, with the help of neighboring communities, fought and beat the fire.

I chatted with Robert Lee Volunteer Fire Department Chief, Mark Sides about what happened.

Steve Kelton, Editor - Livestock Weekly

(Originally produced for the San Angelo Review which merged with The Texana Review in March 2008)

SteveKelton A couple of weeks ago, I sat down for a few minutes with Steve Kelton, editor of the Livestock Weekly to find out about the Livestock Weekly and a little about Steve himself.

I couldn’t think of a more apropos introductory interview for The San Angelo Review than with the editor of the Livestock Weekly, a publication that has a firm reputation both in and out of the state for reporting not only trends in livestock trades but also news of importance to rural Texans.

Join us for a few minutes while Steve and I become acquainted…

Welcome to The San Angelo Review!

(originally produced for the San Angelo Review)

The San Angelo Review is a "new media" show produced by CookieJar Media, which has recently moved its studio from Houston to San Angelo, seeking less hectic environs and a more central location to travel Texas in order to bring quality entertainment and information to you.

ed_hat5_web_2 Hello!  I'm Ed Blackburn, and I'm the owner, host and producer for CookieJar Media shows that embrace "new media" to bring you shows that deal with things that are peculiarly Texas, like The Texana Review and the Texas Rural Land News & Review

Since I've decided to make San Angelo home, it only seems appropriate to add a show that focuses and showcases San Angelo.

What you will find here will be a growing collection of stories, mostly audio and video, that are specific to the San Angelo area - its people, its news, its events and the issues that San Angeloans deal with as Texas and San Angelo enter the 21st century.

As with most "new media" these days, these episodes will be read, listened to, or watched on your computer.  Some of you who are more technologically inclined may download episodes to CDs or DVDs to listen to in your vehicle or watch on your TV.  The most "wired" of you might be inclined to download episodes to your iPod or mp3 player to listen or watch wherever you may be.

I hope you enjoy what's to come at The San Angelo Review and I welcome your comments and suggestions.

I also encourage any who are inclined to become contributors to The San Angelo Review. If you have a story, report, video or anything else that you think will contribute to the direction of The San Angelo Review, please contact me.  You can become a San Angelo Review correspondent!

Best wishes...

Ed Blackburn
