Chapter One from Charles Chupp's "Frankly Speaking"

Charles Chupp came to my attention in a used book store in Houston about two years ago when I pulled his “Nth Reader” from the bookshelf …and where I immediately fell in love with his storytellin’.

When Charles called and asked if I would read a couple of chapters of his new book “Frankly Speaking,” I felt honored, and immediately accepted.

What comes next is my interpretation of the first chapter of Charles Chupp’s – “Frankly Speaking.”

Chapter Two to follow under separate posting.

"Sooner" by Charles Chupp

sooner After several hiccups, bumps, potholes and a move halfway across Texas, I managed to link up with Charles Chupp last week in Brownwood. Met him at a place called Skillets and he bought me lunch as we talked about, well, everything.

He also gave me a couple of his books – “Waggin’ Tails” and “Coffee at LaDon’s.” He signed them both for me.

I’d been struggling to get a makeshift studio together in my new digs near San Angelo so I could renew my efforts for The Texana Review, which includes some reading of Charles Chupp’s work.

I already had one of his other writings picked out when I picked up “Waggin’ Tails” and read the first story titled “Sooner.” I knew I had to put voice to it.

Sooner was Charles Chupp's first canine companion.

So, rather than later, here’s “Sooner.”

(Oh, by the way, a few definitions: "Hugh" is Charles Chupp’s dad; "John Franklin," his younger brother; and "snipes," well they’re cigarette butts for those who haven't the addiction to tobacco)

History 101 by Charles Chupp from "I Got No Reason To Lie"

chupp_pix_rt History 101 by Charles Chupp isn't the history I remember learning as a history major in college. Nor as a continuing student of that which could teach us the future, if we were to pay attention - you know, history.

Nonetheless, historians can have fun with the story-telling of history, especially if you're blessed with a fertile mind, a Big Chief tablet and No. 2 pencil; and just as especially, if you're proud of your community and your state.

And that's what Charles Chupp does, and is.

"Shod in Style" by Charles Chupp

chupchr_lft (Podcast)
I’m looking forward to my meeting Charles Chupp. I’ll be traveling within the next two weeks to De Leon to have a cup of coffee with him and talk about …about …uh …well, I don’t know what we’ll talk about. But I can just about bet that I’ll end up mostly listening, in spite of a penchant I have for uttering balderdash when drinking coffee. After all, this is Charles Chupp!

As it turns out, my readings of Charles Chupp’s writings in “I Got No Reason to Lie” have become wildly popular on The Texana Review, and I’m proud to say that Mr. Chupp likes them, too.

This one is titled “Shod in Style” and is one of his more recent contributions to his ongoing compulsion to write for “I Got No Reason to Lie.”

"Tunnel Vision" by Charles Chupp

chupp_web I've been traveling a lot lately, and meeting some intelligent and smart people.  Intelligent people are interesting.  Smart people are interesting, too.  I admire them both.

Some people equate "smart" with "intelligent."  That's a mistake.  There can be a vast difference.  But smart and intelligent together is truly awesome.  I find that frequently outside the big city.

Anyway, given that I'm still a one man operation competing in a world wide arena like the Internet, I've fallen behind on my production schedule, because when I'm traveling and talkin' to folks, I'm not editing the audio files, nor am I marketing The Texana Review for sponsorships.

Nevertheless, I suspect that there's some good stuff coming your way with some of the stories I intend to tell, that is if you like cowboys, alligators and writers of Texana.

As you know, if you've been here before, I like reading the writings of Charles Chupp.

This is my fourth reading of his truly insightful stuff.  The story is titled, "Tunnel Vision."  It's from his book, "I Got No Reason To Lie."

>  Oh, by the way, you'll be well advised, especially if you're a dog lover, to look into buying Mr. Chupp's recently published, "Waggin' Tales."  It'll be in your bookstore soon.  You might even be able to buy it here.  <

"More About John Henry" by Charles Chupp

Chupchr_lft Charles Chupp and I have been getting to know one another by occasional telephone conversations, and email. And, although Charles doesn't use email himself, we manage to get around it.

I actually own at Big Chief tablet and mechanical pencil; they're over there on my book shelf. And I've tried it, and like it as a way to write, which is what Charles Chupp does.

But I've learned the hunt-'n-peck method of typing on a computer keyboard; and these days, producing things for the MTV-minded crowd requires that I stick to the computer.

Anyway, Charles seems to like the way I read his stuff, and I dearly love reading it.

I discovered late in life that there's a way to look at the world around us, and the people who come into (and out of) our lives.

Although not a complete recipe, it starts out with a twinkle in the eye, and includes a dash of wryness; a copious cup or three of humor; a healthy dose of fresh air; a bit slower lifestyle than that of big-city living; and, if you know of Charles, perhaps a cup of coffee at LaDon's.

Once the recipe is cooked to perfection, the product serves to remind me of one special thing - each day is important in and unto itself.

Mr. Charles Chupp knows this. His writing reflects it. That's why I like it.
Not everyone will; but I hope you do.

This story by Charles Chupp is called - "More About John Henry."

"Showbiz" by Charles Chupp

Chupp_web (Podcast)
Charles Chupp grew up in a small Texas town, De Leon to be exact.  And like anyone who spent any meaningful time in a small town, they know just how important the local movie house was on Saturady mornings.  Here's a thoughtful memory from Charles Chupp. It's titled "Showbiz."

The Bait Is the Secret - Charles Chupp

Chupp01 (Podcast)
While perusing the Texana section of the Half Price Books store over on Westheimer, I happened on a book titled The Nth Reader – Neglected Texas History by Charles Chupp.

Glancing through its pages, I saw short tidbits of Texas history, and readily recognized that these were Charles Chupp’s take on any number of different Texas stories and tales.

I wouldn't even let the cashier hold the book as I gladly paid the half price.

I hadn’t even read through twenty pages before I dialed him up and told him that I wanted to get his permission to read some of his work for The Texana Review.

He said, "Sure!"

Then, he sent me a copy of his first publication titled I Got No Reason To Lie, which is a truly entertaining book.

The following is one of his tales from that book called, The Bait Is the Secret.
